Characteristics of the flora<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The greater part of the area is covered by forest. The periphery belt along the seaside includes the sub-Mediterranean pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) and oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) woods which spread up to 400 meters above sea level, where they develop into the similar pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) and hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinofolia) woods.<\/p>

Distinctive appearance to those woods is attributable to Autumn moor grass (Sesleria autumnalis). At the heights of 800 do 1000 meters above the sea level mainly the beech is growing at the open hill-sides, but due to the particular geomorphology at some locations the fir and hop hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) may be found instead. Above 1000 and up to 1200 meters above sea level the mixed Dinaric beech and fir woods grow, which are actually the richest woods of this region.<\/p>

The peaks at the heights between 1200 and 1400 meters above sea level are covered by pre-mountain beech woods with characteristic saber-shaped bole. Above this belt there are mugo pine (Pinus mugo) woods and bushes and sporadic pastures.<\/p>

These areas are rich with protected plant species. Mugo pine, yew-tree, European globeflower, peony, degenia velebitica, holly, alpine sea holly, yellow gentian, st. john’s lily, carniolan lily, martagon lily, Croatian barberry, white helleborine and lesser butterfly orchid are only several of species that embellish this beautiful scenery.<\/p>

Josip Panci\u00f3, a world-known botanist originally from Bribir, discovered the endemic plant from the family of conifers, which has been named pan\u010di\u0107eva omorika.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The seven walking and hiking trails in Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo, Selce, Novi Vinodolski and Vinodol offer extraordinary sights and a special atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The trails run along the coast, through a pine forest right by the sea, or through the green hinterland across attractive forests, fields, mountain tops, cliffs and ridges.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You should bring a map when walking\/hiking. Prior to departure, be sure to check the distance tables and altitudes of the planned route and adapt the route to your own physical capabilities.<\/p>

Wear hiking boots or similar suitable footwear. Wear suitable clothes and plan for possible changes in weather.<\/p>

Temperature changes of up to 15\u00b0C are possible in higher areas.<\/p>

During the summer period, use them only in the morning and evening due to the sudden effects of altitude difference. Access paths from the sea side are easier whilst those from the Vinodol valley side are steeper.<\/p>

The access path from Drivenik toward the PATH OF CLIFFS is not recommended for unfit persons. There is an altitude difference of approx. 700 m after 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking<\/p>

Sections of some paths are very long and it is impossible to walk them in just one day. Therefore it is recommended to use access and connection paths at some sections of paths to shorten the walk.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Waves Trail leads from Povile to Jadranovo. The total length of the trail is 30 km, and it leads along the coast, mostly next to the towns and villages of Povile, Novi Vinodolski, Selce, Crikvenica, Dramalj and Jadranovo.<\/p>\n

Another part of the Waves Trail leads through the uninhabited area from the Zagori campsite in Novi Vinodolski to Slana Cove in Selce, and then from the peninsula of Ka\u010djak in Dramalj to Perhat in Jadranovo.<\/p>\n

The trail is marked only in these areas. Even though it partly runs next to an inhabited area, you can still see areas of unspoilt nature, such as the holm oak forest in the Dumboka area, and the steep cliffs of Takla and Dumboka.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Karst and Sage Trail starts in Novi Vinodolski and leads to Orljak Pass (260 metres above sea level) between Jadranovo and Drivenik. The total length of the trail is 28 km. For the most part, the Karst and Sage Trail leads along a low hilly ridge with an average altitude of 300 metres which separates the Vinodol valley from the sea.<\/p>

The ridge is steep towards the Vinodol valley, but gentler on the side facing the sea. In the area of Crikvenica, the ridge is bisected by the Dubra\u010dina stream.<\/p>

The trail offers beautiful views of the coast, the Kvarner islands, the Velebit and U\u010dka mountains, the lake in Tribalj, and the forts in Drivenik and Gri\u017eane. It leads past Badanj Fort, the chapels of St. Cosmas and St. Barbara, and the Church of St. George.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Cliff Trail leads from the Vini\u0161te mountain hut at an altitude of 300 metres to the grassy Zebar hilltop in the area of Uhanj at an altitude of 748 metres just above the village of Drivenik.<\/p>\n

The total length of the trail is 29 km, includes the steep rocky cliffs above the Vinodol valley.<\/p>\n

The first part of the trail leads along the lower part of the littoral ridge above Klenovica and Povile, while after the village of Zagon, the trail starts to ascend alongside the steep cliffs above Vinodol. The trail leads through a variety of landscapes ranging from rocky ground to littoral thickets and mountain meadows, which makes walking along it particularly dynamic and interesting.<\/p>\n

When hiking along the Cliff Trail, you can visit the peak of Gradina at an altitude of 379 metres, the vantage points of Kameni Kri\u017e (Stone Cross), Kacalj, Klamaru\u0161a and Slipica, the well-tended Pridva viewpoint, the mountain meadows of Njivine and Zebar, and the Kozak stone massif (669 metres above sea level).<\/p>\n

The Green Trail starts at Luka Krmpotska, next to the hunting lodge, at an altitude of 750 metres and ends at the peak of Medvi\u0111ak at an altitude of 1,027 metres. The total length of the trail is 45 km, a runs past the mountain meadows on the southern slopes of Ri\u010di\u010dko Bilo, Rujnik and Sitovnik, and the peaks of Rujnik (1,042 m), Sitovnik (1,048 m), Zagradski Vrh (1,187 m), Kanculova Glava (1,120 m), and Medvi\u0111ak (1,027 m).<\/p>\n

The first part of the trail leads through beautiful mountain meadows which offer stunning views of the sea, the islands of Kvarner Bay, and Mount Velebit on one side, and the highest mountain peaks in this area (Ri\u010di\u010dko Bilo, Strile\u017e, and Vi\u0161evica) on the other.<\/p>\n

After Sitovnik, the trail leads through forest areas which are interspersed with the scenic meadows of Okrugli, Ravni, Laz and Suha. The Heavenly Trail also starts in Luka Krmpotska next to the hunters lodge at an altitude of 750 metres. It ends at the peak of Medvi\u0111ak at an altitude of 1,027 metres. The total length of the trail is 53.7 km, it encompasses the highest peaks of the area, a these are: Crni Vrh (1,169 m), Ri\u010di\u010dko Bilo (1,286 m), Veliki Smolnik (1,279 m), Strile\u017e (1,381 m), Vi\u0161evica (1,428 m), Zagradski Vrh (1,187 m), Veliki Kobiljak (1,112 m), and Medvi\u0111ak (1,027 m).<\/p>\n

Further north from the mountain peaks, there are vast expanses of beech and spruce forest with the scenic mountain plateaus of Kolevratsko Polje, Petnja, Crni Kal, Ma\u0161evo, Lukovo, Ravno and Li\u010dko Polje in their foothills.<\/p>\n

The Roman Trail starts in Crikvenica next to the Town Sports Hall. For the most part, it follows the Dubra\u010dina stream all the way to the spring near the village of \u010candrli right after Drivenik.<\/p>\n

The total length of the trail is 15 km, and it got its name due to the fact that during the Roman period a road connecting Tarsatica (Trsat in Rijeka) and Senia (Senj) passed alongside the stream.<\/p>\n

The Degenia Trail leads from the coastal village of Sibinj to the campsite in Kozica. The total length of the trail is 10 km, and it encompasses two canyon-type valleys among the hills of Veliki vrh (512 m), Osredak (502 m), and Vrataru\u0161a (510 m).<\/p>\n

It was named after Degenia Velebitica, an endemic plant which was formerly believed to grow only on Mount Velebit.
